A hot dry day at Oran Park saw us whipping out the tinsel and chrissy decorations to adorn our trucks for the kids. After a quick driver debrief it was off around the track for a test lap. A few rock steps, some steep hills, an assortment of wombat holes and lots of damn mud!
With a huge turnout of 4wd volunteers (140 odd I think) waiting in the queue to pickup the kids seemed to take forever. Finally loaded up with smiling mums, dads and kids it was off to show ‘em what 4wding is all about!
With the large number of 4wds and not so many kids we only did a couple or so laps of the track which was fortunate in one way as the mud was causing havoc with peoples engine temps and the like. A sausage sizzle for lunch followed by a raffle rounded the day out. We had an enjoyable day driving the small number of kids that we had around the track and the all seemed to have a great time enjoying the bumpy, muddy ride.
Brett.
The following is Glenn’s version of events for the day…
Lets say that three trips through the mud hole where three to many. On the third trip around the temp started going skyward a quick trip to the wash point seemed too fix the problem, WRONG! The alternater wasn’t working and the carby was holding at 2000rpm and no amount of water seemed to fix the problem!
So with the temp running at normal we thought we could live with the other problems on the way home and sort them later. On the way up the Hume the temp problem raised it’s ugly head. Stuck at the side of the freeway we called for help. Charles, Jen and Brett came to the rescue with bottles of spring water.
The next problem was a dead flat battery. Brett had a set of jump leads which didn’t quite cut it, so we tried to clutch it in reverse, yeh good luck with that one. So we tried to clutch it by towing it – success!
The next drama was to try and get to a carwash to blast out the radiator before the temp hit redline again. So with much spluttering and backfiring due a lack of power we made it to a Carlovers at Liverpool, much to the horror of the owner who thought we wanted to wash three very muddy 4bys. So after a good blasting of water to the radiator and alternator we thought we be off, of course we still had the dead battery problem - every time we got it going it just died due to lack of spark.
Charles then decided that the only thing for it was to pull the alternator apart and clean it out. An hour and a half later we had it fixed and where finally on our way. Thanks heaps to Charles, Jen and Brett for getting us out of the shit. Without them the car would of been on a towtruck! Next year there will be less mud action, MUD SUCKS!!!!!!!!!
